Gsieser Tal/Valle di Casies - experience nature surrounded by an amazing world of mountains
Gsieser Tal (Gsieser valley) is a wide valley leading off the Pustertal (Pusteria valley). It is set between the foothills of the Rieserferner range of mountains and the Defregger alps. The 20 km long valley branches off to the north at Welsberg. A road leads through the wide valley through the small villages of Pichl (Colle), St. Martin (S. Martino) and St. Magdalena (S. Maddalena). The very wide and sunny valley almost level runs as far as St. Magdalena. The slopes on both sides of the valley basin are covered with thick woods of fir and spruce trees. Pichl is the lowest town at 1260 m above sea level. St. Magdalena is at 1400 m and the highest farms are situated at 1530 m above sea level. The main sources of income of the small municipality (about 2,000 inhabitants) are agriculture, that has shapes the valley, and tourism. The peaceful valley offers above all opportunities for rest, relaxation, a lot of nature, clear air and a cultivated landscape kept by diligent farmers. Without doubt the best know son of the valley is Joachim Haspinger, the valiant Capucin priest. In 1809 he played a decisive part in the Tyrolean victory against the French and Bavarians at Bergisel. In winter as in summer hiking enthusiasts can exploit a wide network of signposted trails in the fascinating mountain scenery. Also, the alpine cabin owners will spoil you with the traditional dishes. In winter you can brush up your ski and cross-country ski skills at the ski school, tryout the mountain lift or enjoy cross-country skiing on the Gsieser Tal Loipe.

Welsberg/Monguelfo - gateway to the land of secrets. Traditional shops and an elegant atmosphere in the valley
Several discoveries have proven that Welsberg’s history can be traced back to the late Bronze Age, early Iron Age. Later the Romans erected a "castellum", a fort, at Burgstall and built a settlement. Today the name of the village can be traced back to the family of the Welfsperchs, who administered the region for the Count of Görz. Georg of Welsperg drained the reservoir in 1359. The gained valley basin has been inhabited ever since then. Paul Troger (1698 – 1762), the most important baroque painter of Austria and South Germany, is the most famous son of Welsberg. Also Welsberg has a lot to offer from a cultural point of view. You can walk through the village following in the footsteps of the famous artist Paul Troger, tour the castle with its old fences, replicas of animals and artistically shaped figures and pictures, go to art exhibitions and classical concerts in the castle Schloss Welsperg. Or you can stroll between the remarkable range of shops where shopping becomes an adventure.

Taisten/Tesido - sun terrace between mountain and valley
The charming village of Taisten is set far from traffic on a slightly high ground at 1212m above sea level. It offers an ideal holiday in absolute peace and quiet. It is difficult to determine how far the history of Taisten stretches, but it certainly dates back to prehistoric times. It is assumed that the first settlement took place at the time of the Illyrians and that the origin of the name of Taisten (Tesitin) comes from language of these tribes. The Bavarians settled there in about 600 AD, when the village developed diplomatic importance, as can be seen from the 3 castles that earlier surrounded the village. Taisten was first mentioned in a document in 770. The walks and hiking trails that lead into a countryside of meadows and woodland with glorious views of the Dolomites are unforgettable. You will find that the nearby world of mountains has retained its original state. In summer and winter a hike to the Taistner Alm is a real must as also is, for all culture enthusiasts, the guided tour of the romantic Georgskirche (St George’s Church). Ski school and family-friendly ski lifts for all ski freaks are not missing.
